What is Acetyl-L-Carnitine for Horses?
Our Acetyl-L-Carnitine for horses, also known as ALCAR is a compound normally found within the horse’s body. It is produced from another compound, L-Carnitine, which the body synthesizes from the amino acids lysine and methionine. This naturally occurring amino acid helps the body mobilise fat for energy.
It is necessary for moving long-chain fatty acids into the mitochondria to be burned. Studies have shown that the availability of free carnitine in the muscle cell influences the relative rate of burning fat or carbohydrate.

Acetyl-L-Carnitine, also know as ALCAR or ALC is commonly used to help support horses and ponies:
- By working with the body’s natural pathways for mobilising fat for energy.
- Supporting normal daily exercise and activity and tightness from training.
- Helps to maintain and support glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity.
- Helps to maintain healthy laminae, circulation and nerve pathways in hooves.
For an average 500kg horse – Feed 1 x 10ml scoop per day, or after intensive work.
1 x 10ml scoop = approx. 10 grams.
